およそ二万年前の最終氷期の最盛期以降に形成された地層を研究しています。そこから活断層の活動履歴や火山噴火史といった地質学的な記録を読み取って、将来発生する自然災害を軽減したいと考えています。これまでに静岡県では富士川河口断層帯や北伊豆断層帯の周辺でボーリング調査をおこなって、地層に含まれている植物片や貝化石の放射性炭素年代値を測定して地表に変位を生じさせた古地震の履歴を検討しています。また、日本や韓国、台湾沿岸において放射性炭素の海洋リザーバー効果(大気と海洋の差異)の時空間変化を解明する研究もおこなっています。
